I remember back some time around 2003 or so, a friend and I were doing a research project on the advancement of suburban development and mall culture for a history class in high school.
Our primary research subject happened to be the nearby SHM. We spent several class periods doing field research there thanks to a very understanding history teacher with a beat up car.
We even skipped out of an assembly on teen drinking or some-such scare-tactic theater to enjoy a (marginally) better film at the theater.
Damn shame that this mall has bitten the dust. We chose it specifically because it provided a very well-preserved window into the mall experience of generations past. The neon lighting was always a nice touch.
Rest in peace, South Hills Mall...
